Located in rural Montgomery County, Maryland, Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard seeks to return a Historic Bank Barn and Silo to agricultural use by producing superb, handcrafted wines within the existing structure and a new, state-of-the-art Winemaking Facility.

The design seeks to celebrate the renovated Barn by creating a new “forecourt” to organize operational requirements of the winemaking process and approach views from Comus Road, a rural, tree-lined byway. The renovated Barn will include public and private tasting areas as well as winery offices. Large, new doors will open from the tasting room to an outdoor terrace with views of the winemaking operation, adjacent vineyards, and Sugarloaf Mountain beyond.

The new metal and glass Winemaking Facility is partially banked into the earth and faces onto the new “forecourt” emitting a soft glow at night from within the glazed fermentation room as a beacon for the Vineyard toward Comus Road.
