This new house is located on a one acre site at the end of a cul-de-sac high above the Palisades section of Washington. The site slopes steeply towards the rear and has lovely views of the Potomac River. The street is lined with handsome Georgian houses, an architectural style admired by our client. Our design strategy was to curve the house around the street, and break down the large program into five discrete elements. The guest wing anchors the west side of the composition, which is connected to the main house by a library link. The main house contains four bedrooms, the reception room, and the living and dining rooms. These are connected in turn by the kitchen, which leads to the pool/carriage house wing. This symmetrical composition is complimented by an asymmetric site strategy. A large terrace is centered on the main house, leading to a series of gardens and the swimming pool, which is centered on the pool house. The materials of the house compliment its stately architectural quality in interior rooms with raised paneling and exterior materials of copper, slate roots, and tumbled, oversized brick set in Flemish bond.
