GLASS BRIDGE ADDITION
BETHESDA, MD | 2001

Located on a rolling two-acre site, this rambler had been remodeled and enlarged at least five times in its forty-year life. The owners wished to resolve the resulting awkward floor plan and combination of styles while adding two new bedrooms for their young children, a new Master Suite, an office, a recreation room, and an updated kitchen. An award-winning cabana and an existing Music Room on the east side of the site were to be retained. To bridge these two existing elements with the remainder of the original house, we extruded the original roof form over the new volumes. The music room was extended to create the new office and to receive the roof. A new interior gallery serves as an organizational core and provides display space for the owners’ extensive art collection. The new bedrooms are arranged around this gallery and an exterior courtyard, to allow light and air into the interior of the thick plan. A glass block enclosed spiral stair connects the main floor with the basement.
