This is a one-hundred acre estate located in the Hunt Country of Fauquier County, Virginia. The property, bounded by stone walls, is comprised of rolling hills, meadows, ponds, and forest. The design team was asked to develop a compound of six buildings: a Manor House, a Guest House, a Summer (Pond) House, two utility buildings, and to renovate the existing Stable.
The main buildings are sited axially. The Manor House is located near the center of the site, atop a narrow hill. From this high vantage point one enjoys the best panorama of the site and dramatic views of the other buildings. The buildings reflect the local vernacular of fieldstone walls, terne roofs, and a grounded relationship to the land through extensive landscaping. About fifty acres of the site have been developed, while the rest of the property will remain a working farm and forestland. The Manor House and Guest House are on the hill beyond the pond and above the Summer House. The program for the Main House consists of grand entertaining rooms, four bedrooms, a three-car garage, and a Pool House. The L-shaped plan forms a courtyard open on two sides to take advantage of a diagonal view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The house consists of three large pavilions linked by galleries: the center pavilion includes the double-height Foyer and Great Room, and the side pavilions contain the Dining Room, Kitchen, Library, and bedrooms. The Guest House, sited for privacy down a tree-lined allee, has two bedrooms and a central living area.
