ILLUMINATED KITCHEN
RENOVATION | WASHINGTON, DC | 2005

This renovation, completed in 2005, restored a historic house and created a new kitchen and family space for a young family in the Cleveland Park neighborhood of Washington, DC.

By rearranging the program and simplifying the proportions of spaces, the renovation maintains the scale of the original house while enhancing the quality of the spaces. The kitchen was moved from its dark and cramped original location to the rear of the house, where sunlight spills through the window bay to illuminate the room, which provides an ideal space for cooking, dining, and socializing. Space-saving design strategies include a slide-out pantry that moves food storage from wall surfaces to wall interiors, custom built-in cabinetry, and added windows to create a breathable, airy room.
