HERITAGE ROW
Cunningham | Quill Architects designed Heritage Row to evoke the historic character of Capitol Hill architecture. Within blocks of Union Station and the Capital Building, the six new-construction rowhomes are reminiscent of beautifully restored, 100-year-old townhouses, respectful of the historic architectural style seen throughout the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The facades utilize traditional but playful brick, cast stone, and window mullion detailing and roofs that are clad in slate tile and copper trim. In addition to a private front garden and walk which leads to a traditional covered entry and front stoop, each townhouse is designed with a private one-car “garage-within-a-garage,” located within the below-grade parking garage dedicated to the Heritage Foundation.
The interiors were designed to be a contemporary interpretation of an historic townhouse. The crown and base trim, and architectural moldings along the stairwell, are traditional features of many Capitol Hill townhouses but which have been designed with cleaner, more contemporary lines and proportions. Clear-finished white oak wood paneling above the modern, limestone-clad two-sided fireplace which divides the Living and Dining rooms, provides a beautiful contrast to the crisp and bright interior spaces.
The nine-foot tall terrace doors and ten-foot ceilings ensure the ground floor of the rowhomes are light-filled and airy. The terrace doors open onto a deck of Ipe wood with a few steps down to a terrace of bluestone slate. The generously sized terraces have raised brick garden beds and privacy walls to allow the occupants to utilize these outdoor spaces comfortably and privately.
