Cunningham | Quill Architects is excited to announce that The Residences at St. Elizabeths East received a 2021 District of Columba Award for Excellence in Preservation from the DC Preservation League.
Cunningham | Quill worked with the Anacostia Economic Development Corporation and Flaherty & Collins Properties to convert the St. Elizabeths Continuous Treatment (CT) Campus into new affordable and market-rate housing. Constructed in the 1930s, the CT Campus was originally used to house permanent psychiatric residents of St. Elizabeths Hospital. The design team’s mandate was to transform a self-contained environment that limited the movement of its residents into a new, inviting residential space. This included taking spaces that were built to “contain” and changing them into open, vibrant, and welcoming spaces. The adaptive reuse of the CT Campus into the Residences at St. Elizabeths East illustrates how we can shape our communities through the revival and repurposing of cultural and historic resources.
